Reef Aquarium Lighting

Did you know that when fish and other forms of marine life receive absolutely no light, they evolve by eventually going blind?

With reef tanks fluorescent lighting is utterly important.  In most cases the lighting included with the tank will most likely be insufficient.  You will need to adjust this to maintain the health of your coral . . . not to mention to keep them looking fab!  (Corals need at least 4 watts per gallon.  It is possible that two tubes may be needed.  Keep this in mind if the aquarium is begun before adding coral or live rock).  Now here's a huge DON’T.  Don’t use candescent lighting.  These types of lights produce a lot of heat.  Maintaining proper water temperature is crucial for the survival any aquarium.  Make sure to change out candescent bulbs with fluorescent ones if needed.

Aquariums with plants need a little bit more attention in regards to lighting.  To keep aquatic plants thriving use of either a tri-phosphor tube or full spectrum fluorescent bulb is necessary.  Without either of these elements, the plants will surely shrivel and fade away.  Different plants of course need different amounts of light.  The general rule of thumb is to provide the full spectrum bulb so that it receives the red, blue and green parts of the light spectrum.

Just remember to research thoroughly the needs of each living piece to be included in an aquarium so that it may thrive in your life for years to come.
